The Science Behind It

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture works by increasing highly oxygenated blood flow to the area in pain or to the organ producing a symptom, and by triggering the release of the body's own pain-relieving chemicals, including endorphins and enkephalins.

Most symptoms involve reduced circulation to a specific area, whether the problem presents physically as pain or emotionally as anxiety or low mood. Restoring that blood flow is the mechanism behind the relief.

If you have pain that has lingered or has not responded to other treatments, acupuncture offers a well-established, drug-free option with very few side effects.

What conditions does acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture is used for pain, mental and emotional health, hormonal and fertility concerns, digestive complaints, respiratory conditions and neurological symptoms. Below is what we most commonly treat at our Fort Lauderdale clinic.

Pain and musculoskeletal conditions

Acupuncture for back pain

Acupuncture relieves lower back pain by reducing muscle guarding and restoring circulation to the affected segment. It is commonly used for herniated discs, chronic lumbar pain and post-surgical back pain. Patients frequently report relief within the first few sessions.

Acupuncture for neck pain

Acupuncture for neck pain targets the muscles and nerves that cause stiffness, limited rotation and referred pain into the shoulder or arm. It is particularly effective for desk-work tension and whiplash. Read more about neck pain treatment.

Acupuncture for sciatica

Sciatic pain travels from the lower back through the hip and down the leg. Acupuncture reduces the nerve compression and inflammation driving it, often easing the burning and numbness that medication alone does not resolve.

Acupuncture for shoulder and knee pain

Frozen shoulder, rotator cuff strain, arthritic knees and sports injuries all respond well. Because we needle distally, we can treat a painful joint without placing needles into the inflamed area itself.

Acupuncture for headaches and migraines

Acupuncture is used both to shorten an active migraine and to reduce how often attacks occur. It is a common choice for tension headaches, cluster headaches and migraines with aura, particularly for patients who want to limit medication use.

Acupuncture for neuropathy and nerve pain

Peripheral neuropathy brings burning, tingling and numbness in the hands and feet. Acupuncture improves microcirculation to the affected nerves, which can reduce those sensations and improve sensitivity over a course of treatment.

Acupuncture for fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia involves widespread pain, fatigue and disturbed sleep. Acupuncture is used alongside functional medicine testing to address pain sensitivity and the underlying drivers together. More on fibromyalgia.

Dry needling vs acupuncture

Dry needling targets trigger points in a tight muscle. Acupuncture treats the whole system, including the cause of the tension. As a licensed acupuncture physician, Dr. Shelley can do both. Compare dry needling and acupuncture.

Mental and emotional health

Acupuncture for anxiety and stress

Acupuncture calms an overactive stress response, shifting the nervous system out of fight-or-flight. Patients commonly describe a deep settled calm during and after treatment, with better sleep and less day-to-day reactivity over a course of care. Does acupuncture work for anxiety?

Acupuncture for insomnia

Acupuncture is used for trouble falling asleep, waking at 3am and unrefreshing sleep. Treatment addresses the stress and hormonal patterns behind the disruption rather than sedating you. More on insomnia.

Fertility, hormones and women's health

Acupuncture for fertility

Fertility acupuncture supports natural conception and is widely used alongside IVF and IUI cycles. Treatment focuses on cycle regularity, uterine blood flow and the stress load that often accompanies fertility treatment.

Acupuncture for PCOS and menopause

For PCOS, acupuncture is used for irregular cycles and hormone balance. For perimenopause and menopause, it is used for hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes and sleep. Both pair well with hormone testing.

Digestive, respiratory and cosmetic

Acupuncture for digestive problems

Used for IBS, bloating, reflux, constipation and chronic indigestion. Acupuncture regulates gut motility and reduces inflammation, and is often combined with custom herbal formulas.

Acupuncture for allergies and sinus congestion

South Florida allergy seasons are long. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs reduce congestion, sinus pressure and the immune overreaction behind seasonal symptoms. More on seasonal allergies.

Acupuncture for vertigo and tinnitus

Acupuncture is used for dizziness, positional vertigo and ringing in the ears by improving circulation to the inner ear and reducing the muscular tension in the neck that often contributes to both.

Facial acupuncture for wrinkles

Cosmetic acupuncture stimulates collagen and circulation in the face to soften fine lines, with no fillers or downtime. How facial acupuncture smooths lines.

We treat many conditions beyond this list. See everything we treat or call 954-530-0125 to ask about yours.

Individual results vary. Acupuncture complements but does not replace care from your physician. Nothing here is a guarantee of outcome. For independent background on the research, see the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health at the US National Institutes of Health.

Distal needling acupuncture on hands and feet Balance Method

Our Speciality

What is Distal Needling Acupuncture?

Distal Needling Acupuncture (DNA) is a variation of the Balance Method that places needles far from the site of pain, mostly between the elbows and hands and the knees and feet. It treats the painful area without needling it directly.

In practice this means you lie comfortably on your back and keep your clothes on. Patients often notice a change in their pain during the session itself. It is the style this clinic was built on, developed here by Dr. Ashley Herrin and taught directly to Dr. Daylin Shelley.

"When I switched to using this Distal Needling Acupuncture style, my results were much better."

Dr. Ashley Herrin

Gentle acupuncture for needle-sensitive patients and children

Dr. Shelley is trained in Toyohari, a very gentle Japanese meridian therapy that often uses minimal or no needle insertion. It is our usual approach for children, for anyone genuinely afraid of needles, and for patients who are highly sensitive or depleted. If fear of needles has kept you away, this is the place to start.

Acupuncture combined with herbs and functional medicine

Acupuncture is often most effective as part of a wider plan. Dr. Shelley can draw on custom herbal formulas, nutritional counseling and integrative functional medicine, including lab testing and hormone work, all under one roof in Fort Lauderdale.

Acupuncture questions, answered

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most people feel little or nothing. Acupuncture needles are about the width of a human hair, far thinner than a needle used for injections or blood draws. You may notice a brief dull or heavy sensation at a point, which usually fades in seconds. Read more.

How many acupuncture sessions will I need?

It depends on how long you have had the problem. Recent, acute pain often improves in one to three sessions. Chronic conditions present for years typically need six to ten visits, usually starting weekly and spacing out as you improve. Dr. Shelley will give you an estimate at your first visit.

Does insurance cover acupuncture in Florida?

Many plans now include acupuncture, particularly for pain. Vibrant Health Center accepts a range of insurance plans. Check your coverage or call 954-530-0125 and we will verify your benefits before you book.

What should I expect at my first acupuncture appointment?

Plan for 45 to 60 minutes. Dr. Shelley takes a full health history, examines you and explains her plan before any needles are used. Treatment follows in the same visit. You stay clothed, lying on your back. Eat something beforehand and wear comfortable clothes.

What is the difference between acupuncture and dry needling?

Dry needling is a narrower technique that releases trigger points in a tight muscle, and in Florida it is often performed by physical therapists. Acupuncture is a complete medical system requiring years of training and state licensure as an acupuncture physician. Full comparison.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture performed by a licensed practitioner using single-use sterile needles has a strong safety record. Side effects are uncommon and minor, usually slight bruising or brief tiredness. Tell Dr. Shelley if you are pregnant, taking blood thinners or have a pacemaker so she can adapt your treatment.

Can I have acupuncture if I am afraid of needles?

Yes. Dr. Shelley is trained in Toyohari, a gentle Japanese method that often uses very shallow or no insertion, and our distal needling style keeps points away from the painful area entirely. Tell us when you book and we will plan around it.
